These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The Brane X ranks #4 of 78 large speakers by sound quality at $500; the JBL Boombox 4 ranks #19 of 75 boombox speakers by sound quality at $549.95.

What the Brane X gets right: a dedicated subwoofer plus two midrange drivers and two tweeters reach a measured -10dB extension of 31Hz in a 3.5 kg speaker, with Wi-Fi, AirPlay and Alexa on top of Bluetooth. Independent testing finds it loud with well-balanced mids and useful bass-level controls. The catch: the front-facing design changes the sound off to the sides, bass shifts at maximum volume, and the default aux mode has very high latency.
The case for the Boombox 4: very strong output for its size, a 28-hour claimed battery, IP68 protection, and 7 EQ bands that let it be tuned better than the Boombox 3. Set against that: it is overpriced for the category, sounds worse than the Boombox 3 out of the box, and has no aux input.
Buy the Brane X at $500 for a large speaker, or the JBL Boombox 4 at $549.95 for a boombox speaker instead.
If battery life is a priority, the JBL Boombox 4 is rated for 28 hours versus 12 hours for the Brane X.

The Two Speakers In Full
Brane X: $500 Amazon eBay
Pros: The Brane X pairs a dedicated RAD subwoofer with two midrange drivers and two tweeters to achieve extraordinary low bass for a 3.5kg portable: its measured -10dB extension is 31Hz. Independent testing finds it loud, with well-balanced mids, a smooth treble balance and useful bass-level controls; Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Alexa, quality Bluetooth codecs and low-latency aux pass-through make it unusually versatile. Measured bass extension of 31Hz (-10dB).
Cons: The front-facing design has only moderate dispersion, so sound changes noticeably off to the sides or behind it. Bass response shifts at maximum volume, the default aux mode has very high latency, and some listeners find the upper register edgy or need EQ to achieve their preferred balance. Its claimed 12-hour runtime and premium cost make it more of a compact high-end system than a carefree all-day speaker.

JBL Boombox 4: $549.95 Amazon B&H Photo Video eBay
Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.
