Short answer: the Bose SoundLink Max for battery life and ruggedness, the Marshall Middleton for bass depth. The Bose runs a claimed 20 hours and tested past 43, with IP67 protection to 1m, but its response has a big upper-bass peak, a dipped midrange and peaks and dips above it. The Middleton goes very deep for its size, yet shows a 5db dip at 1.7kHz and 6.3kHz, a 9kHz treble peak, and is not a very smooth frequency response.
Buy the Bose SoundLink Max. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $129.01 you would save on the Marshall Middleton does not close the gap.

Pros: IP67 rated: dustproof and waterproof to 1m. Up to 20 hour battery; real-world testing found 43+ hours. Deep, rich bass with neutral tuning, app EQ. USB-C doubles as device charger. Sturdy carry handle. The aux input has lower latency (about 33ms) than most Bluetooth connections. Measured bass extension of 48Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Big peak in the upper bass, dipped midrange and lots of peaks and dips above the midrange. Bass not as deep as a Boom 2. Gets distorted above 80%. Self drains the battery about 20% a week.

Smaller models: the Marshall Emberton III (rated 2.7/5) and the Marshall Willen II (rated 4/5).
Pros: Very deep bass for the size/weight. Measured bass extension of 39Hz (-10dB).
Cons: 5db dip at 1.7kHz and 6.3kHz. 9kHz treble peak. Not a very smooth frequency response. A lot of Marshall’s added dsp echo which cannot be turned off, very distracting and annoying. It’s like forcing you to listen to your music in an echo chamber. Bass is reasonably deep but artificial sounding and flabby, with no attack and no dynamics. Treble is rolled off.
