Short answer: the JBL Xtreme 5 for sound quality, the Bose SoundLink Max for the lower price. These rank #17 and #2 out of 78 large speakers, $0.95 apart, and the gap in measured performance is large.
The Xtreme 5’s pros describe it as a fantastic-sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, reaching bass well below 40Hz and beating both the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. It also plays clean at volume, a contrast the pros draw explicitly against the JBL Boombox 4. The Bose’s own cons tell a different story: a big peak in the upper bass, a dipped midrange, and further peaks and dips above it, plus distortion above 80% volume.
The Xtreme 5 isn’t without flaws. Its cons note a hole in the mid-upper bass that can’t be EQ’d out, and default EQ presets that are weak enough that the review recommends a custom EQ (the setup note points to an Oluv EQ preset) to get its best sound. It is also bigger and heavier than the outgoing Xtreme 4, and the cons call it high priced even before this comparison’s price gap.
What the JBL Xtreme 5 adds: a removable battery, a 7-band app EQ (the Bose has none), Auracast party linking, a 110dB max volume rating, and IP68 sealing versus the Bose’s IP67.
What the Bose SoundLink Max adds: an aux input with 33ms latency, which the Xtreme 5 lacks entirely, and a meaningfully smaller, lighter build for easier one-hand carrying.
Buy the JBL Xtreme 5 if sound quality is the priority. Its measured rank is dramatically higher, and the bass depth and clean high-volume output are the biggest differentiators here.
Buy the Bose SoundLink Max if the $0.95 savings and a smaller, lighter body matter more to you than closing that sound-quality gap.

Pros: IP67 rated - dustproof and waterproof to 1m. Up to 20 hour battery; real-world testing found 43+ hours. Deep, rich bass with neutral tuning, app EQ. USB-C doubles as device charger. Sturdy carry handle. Measured bass extension of 48Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Big peak in the upper bass, dipped midrange and lots of peaks and dips above the midrange. Bass not as deep as a Boom 2. Gets distorted above 80%. Self drains the battery about 20% a week.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.
