Short answer: the Bose SoundLink Max. It ranks #17 of 105 large speakers by sound quality (rated 4.3/5) at $399 and is still sold new; the JBL Xtreme ranks #72 (rated 3.2/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The JBL Xtreme’s replacement, the JBL Xtreme 5, is rated 4.6/5 at $349.99.
The SoundLink Max is the current, better-sounding speaker. Its bass reaches about 48Hz before falling 10dB, it lasted over 43 hours in real-world battery testing, it is IP67 and charges over USB-C, and its aux input has low latency. Its upper bass peaks and its midrange dips, and it distorts above about 80 percent volume.
The original Xtreme is discontinued and shows its age. Two woofers and two tweeters play in stereo, Alan Ross measured 96dB, it has a speakerphone and JBL Connect linking, and its battery is rated for 15 hours. Its bass distorts at high volume, and newer Xtremes outclass it.
Buy the Bose SoundLink Max. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the JBL Xtreme is discontinued, so it is only available used.

Pros: IP67 rated: dustproof and waterproof to 1m. Up to 20 hour battery; real-world testing found 43+ hours. Deep, rich bass with neutral tuning, app EQ. USB-C doubles as device charger. Sturdy carry handle. The aux input has lower latency (about 33ms) than most Bluetooth connections. Measured bass extension of 48Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Big peak in the upper bass, dipped midrange and lots of peaks and dips above the midrange. Bass not as deep as a Soundcore Boom 2. Gets distorted above 80%. Self drains the battery about 20% a week.

JBL Xtreme: $200 Discontinued eBay

Pros: 15 hour battery. IPX7 water resistance. JBL Connect for pairing with other JBL speakers. Built-in microphone for calls.
Cons: Issues with bass distortion at high volumes. An older speaker outclassed by newer releases of the Xtreme. External AC power brick for charging. Discontinued.
