Short answer: the Bose SoundLink Max. It ranks #17 of 105 large speakers by sound quality (rated 4.3/5) at $399 and is still sold new; the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4 ranks #67 (rated 3.3/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4’s replacement, the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 9, is still sold new.
The SoundLink Max is the tougher, longer-running speaker. It is rated IP67, claims 20 hours of battery and lasted over 43 hours in real-world testing, and its bass reaches about 48Hz before falling 10dB. Its aux input has low latency, about 33ms, and its USB-C port charges a phone. Its upper bass peaks and its midrange dips, and it distorts above about 80 percent volume.
The Onyx Studio 4 is a discontinued indoor speaker. Two woofers, two tweeters and a passive radiator play in stereo with balanced, crisp sound, and it can link with up to 100 speakers. It has no water rating, its battery is rated for just 8 hours, and it charges from an external power brick.
Buy the Bose SoundLink Max. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4 is discontinued, so it is only available used.
If water resistance matters to you, the Bose SoundLink Max at IP67 (brief submersion) holds up far better than the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 4 at no water resistance.

Pros: IP67 rated: dustproof and waterproof to 1m. Up to 20 hour battery; real-world testing found 43+ hours. Deep, rich bass with neutral tuning, app EQ. USB-C doubles as device charger. Sturdy carry handle. The aux input has lower latency (about 33ms) than most Bluetooth connections. Measured bass extension of 48Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Big peak in the upper bass, dipped midrange and lots of peaks and dips above the midrange. Bass not as deep as a Soundcore Boom 2. Gets distorted above 80%. Self drains the battery about 20% a week.

Pros: Balanced sound quality with deep resonant bass and crisp treble, large dynamic range. Multi-host Bluetooth connectivity for 2 phones, daisy chaining up to 100 speakers. Elegant modern design with smooth curves and premium materials.
Cons: 8 hour battery at medium volume. Not at loud as others. Not as deep of bass as the newer Onyx. External AC power brick for charging. Discontinued.
