Short answer: the Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen. It ranks #37 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality, rated 3.8/5, at $159; the JBL Charge Essential 3 SE ranks #43, rated 3.7/5, and costs $199.95, which makes this an easy call rather than a real tradeoff.
Heard side by side, the Bose is clearer. In a direct comparison the Flex 2nd Gen had more detail, a larger soundstage and nicer highs, and hit harder in the upper bass. The Charge Essential 3 SE was louder with deeper bass, but that bass could distort, and it sounded muddier and more strident in the upper mids. The reviewer preferred the Bose.
Size is the big practical difference. The Flex weighs 1.3 lbs (586 g) and clips to a bag. The Essential 3 SE is a Charge-size 2.1 lbs (960 g) speaker.
Battery and features: the Essential 3 SE claims 20 hours against the Flex’s 12, and adds a USB-C power bank and Auracast. The Flex adds a built-in microphone and aptX Adaptive, and its elevated treble can make hi-hats piercing. Both are IP67 with an app EQ and stereo pairing.
Buy the Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen. It is rated higher for sound quality than the JBL Charge Essential 3 SE and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.

Pros: A very portable 586g, IP67-rated speaker with a clear, well-balanced midrange that keeps voices and instruments intelligible. The second generation adds a Bose app with 3-band EQ, better-placed controls and stereo pairing with another Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen. It supports AAC and aptX Adaptive in addition to SBC, making it a stronger wireless option than most small rivals.
Cons: One Flex remains mono and cannot deliver genuine low-bass rumble; RTINGS also found the elevated treble can turn hi-hats and other high-frequency detail piercing. The claimed battery life is only 12 hours, and some owners report accelerated standby drain after firmware updates. It is expensive for its size, so the added app and codec support, not a transformational sound upgrade over the original, are the main reasons to choose it.

Pros: Gets louder than the Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen and digs deeper in the bass, with a separate 20mm tweeter, two passive radiators and 40W of amplification in the familiar Charge body. IP67 water and dust protection, a claimed 20 hours of battery life, a USB-C power bank output, Auracast stereo pairing and multi-speaker linking, Bluetooth 5.4 with AAC, and app EQ.
Cons: In side-by-side listening against the JBL Charge 6, its bass is weaker and less stable and distorts on bass-heavy tracks even with the bass turned down in the app, while a narrow boost in the upper mids makes it sound less natural. Against the Bose Soundlink Flex 2nd gen it sounds muddier and more strident, with less detail and a smaller soundstage. At full price it costs as much as the JBL Charge 6, which is the better speaker.
