These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen ranks #2 of 14 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $219.99; the Sonos Roam ranks #93 of 172 medium speakers by sound quality at $169.99.
Why pick the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen: SoundGuys called it the best-sounding Amazon speaker they have tested, scoring it 7.8 of 10. The catch: SoundGuys still marked it down on Value (4.0 of 10) given the $219.99 list price, and it is explicitly not true left-right stereo from one cabinet, so a stereo pair is needed for real width in a larger room.
The Sonos Roam is the battery-powered, tougher choice. A compact Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with very neutral sound, Qi wireless charging and Alexa or Sonos Voice Control. Its battery is rated for 10 hours, while the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen needs an outlet. It is rated IPX5, while the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen has no water resistance. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen lacks. Watch for: Bass extension isn’t very good.
One note: the Sonos Roam is discontinued and no longer widely available new. The Sonos Roam’s replacement, the Sonos Roam 2, is still sold new.
Buy the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen at $219.99 if you want a powered desktop speaker. Buy the Sonos Roam at $169.99 if you want a medium speaker instead.
