The Echo Studio 2nd Gen is the best-sounding Echo. A 3.75-inch woofer and three 2.25-inch drivers firing left, right and up give it width and separation from one cabinet. SoundGuys called it the best-sounding Amazon speaker it has tested. It plays Dolby Atmos and spatial audio, has a 3-band EQ, and includes a Zigbee, Matter and Thread smart home hub.
The Dot Max is the smaller, cheaper upgrade over a basic Dot. Its 2.5-inch woofer and tweeter give it a balanced midrange that RTINGS liked for voices, and its microphone is excellent at hearing commands across a room. Engadget found its bass and treble less cleanly separated than older, larger Echos. Neither speaker has a wired input or a battery.
Buy the Amazon Echo Dot Max if the price matters more than sound quality. Buy the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen if sound quality matters more than the price.
