What the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen does well: A great sounding Amazon smart speaker, with wide sound from one box, Dolby Atmos and a built in smart home hub. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Alexa Home Theater), which the Sonos Play cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Play lacks. The catch: SoundGuys still marked it down on Value (4.0 of 10) given the $219.99 list price, and it is explicitly not true left-right stereo from one cabinet, so a stereo pair is needed for real width in a larger room.
The Sonos Play is the battery-powered, tougher option. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with wide stereo sound, a long lasting swappable battery, waterproofing and full Sonos multiroom support. Its battery is rated for 24 hours, while the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen needs an outlet. It is rated IP67, while the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen lacks. Watch for: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen at $219.99 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Sonos Play at $299 for a medium speaker instead.
