What the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen does well: A great sounding Amazon smart speaker, with wide sound from one box, Dolby Atmos and a built in smart home hub. The tradeoff: SoundGuys still marked it down on Value (4.0 of 10) given the $219.99 list price, and it is explicitly not true left-right stereo from one cabinet, so a stereo pair is needed for real width in a larger room.
The case for the JBL Authentics 500: A large smart speaker with a built in subwoofer, virtual Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi streaming and both Alexa and Google Assistant. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen. The tradeoff: Bass is specified only to 40Hz at -6dB, so deep-bass reach is limited for a cabinet this size.
Buy the JBL Authentics 500. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $229.96 you would save on the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen does not close the gap.
