The Echo Studio 2nd Gen is the much bigger-sounding smart speaker. A 3.75-inch woofer and three drivers firing left, right and up give width and separation from one cabinet, it plays Dolby Atmos, and it has a 3-band EQ and a Zigbee, Matter and Thread hub built in. SoundGuys called it the best-sounding Amazon speaker it has tested.
The Google Home Speaker is the compact Gemini option. Its 107mm sphere fits almost anywhere, and it works as a smart home hub with a Thread border router and Matter support. Its single 58mm driver gives clear vocals but barely any bass, and SoundGuys heard shrill highs when pushed. Its USB-C port carries power only.
Buy the Amazon Echo Studio 2nd Gen. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $120 saving on the Google Home Speaker is not enough to make up the difference.
