What the Amazon Echo Pop does well: A very cheap compact Alexa speaker with strong voice pickup, smart home support and eero Wi-Fi extender support. The catch: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Sonos Roam 2 is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A small Wi-Fi and Bluetooth speaker with water resistance, Alexa built in and Sonos multiroom support. Its battery is rated for 10 hours, while the Amazon Echo Pop needs an outlet. It is rated IPX5, while the Amazon Echo Pop has no water resistance. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. Watch for: Exact same sound quality as the original Sonos Roam.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop at $45.98 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Sonos Roam 2 at $178 for a medium speaker instead.
