These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Amazon Echo Pop ranks #15 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $45.98; the Sonos Move 2 ranks #28 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $480.
What the Amazon Echo Pop does well: A very cheap compact Alexa speaker with strong voice pickup, smart home support and eero Wi-Fi extender support. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Sonos Move 2 lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Alexa), which the Sonos Move 2 cannot. The tradeoff: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Sonos Move 2 is the battery-powered, tougher choice. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with warm, full sound, clear mids and a long battery for moving around the home. Its battery is rated for 24 hours, while the Amazon Echo Pop needs an outlet. It is rated IP56, while the Amazon Echo Pop has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. Watch for: Not very loud.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop ($45.98) for a powered desktop speaker; the Sonos Move 2 ($480) suits a large speaker instead.
