Short answer: the Google Home Speaker, if you are buying new. The Google Nest Audio ranks higher than the Amazon Echo Pop (#9 vs #14 of 14 powered desktop speakers) but is discontinued; its replacement, the Google Home Speaker, is rated 3.0/5 at $99.99 and is still sold new.
What the Amazon Echo Pop does well: A compact 0.4 lbs (195 g) half-sphere Alexa smart speaker with strong voice pickup, a mic mute button and Matter and Sidewalk smart home support. The catch: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Google Nest Audio is the better-sounding choice. Google Assistant is built in at no extra cost, and Chromecast lets you cast from almost any music app over Wi-Fi rather than only Bluetooth. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. The tradeoff: Each unit is mono; a genuine left-right stereo pair means buying two and pairing them over Wi-Fi.
Buy the Google Home Speaker, the replacement for the discontinued Google Nest Audio; it is rated higher for sound quality than the Amazon Echo Pop.
