Short answer: the Google Home Speaker. It ranks #13 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality, rated 3.0/5, at $99.99. The Amazon Echo Pop ranks #15, rated 2.4/5, at $45.98, $54.01 cheaper, not enough of a saving to outweigh the sound-quality gap.
The case for the Amazon Echo Pop: A very cheap compact Alexa speaker with strong voice pickup, smart home support and eero Wi-Fi extender support. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Google Home Speaker lacks. The catch: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Google Home Speaker is the better-sounding pick. A compact Gemini smart speaker that doubles as a smart home hub with a Thread border router and Matter support. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. The catch: This is Google’s current speaker, and reviewers agree it is a downgrade in sound from the discontinued Google Nest Audio it replaces: SoundGuys measured its acoustic hardware directly against the Google Nest Audio and found a single 58mm full-range driver against the Google Nest Audio’s 75mm woofer plus dedicated 19mm tweeter, calling it ‘half the audio hardware for the same sticker price.’
Buy the Google Home Speaker. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $54.01 you would save on the Amazon Echo Pop does not close the gap.
