The Dot Max adds a real woofer and tweeter. Its 2.5-inch woofer and separate tweeter replace the Dot’s single 44mm full-range driver, and Engadget found it louder and bassier in a direct comparison. RTINGS also rates its microphone highly for picking up commands from across a room or in noise, and it pairs with a Fire TV Stick through Alexa Home Theater.
The 5th Gen Dot is the cheaper way into Alexa. What Hi-Fi still liked its sound for the size, and it adds things the Max lacks: a room temperature sensor and eero Wi-Fi extender support. Its limits show at volume, where it distorts and the bass thins out. Neither has a battery, a 3.5mm input or true stereo from one unit.
Buy the Amazon Echo Dot Max. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $10 saving on the Amazon Echo Dot 5th Gen is not enough to make up the difference.
