Short answer: the ADAM Audio D3v. It ranks #3 of 47 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 4.5/5, at $349.99. The Yamaha HS3 ranks #40, rated 2.9/5, at $229.99, $120 cheaper, which does not close the gap in sound quality.
The ADAM Audio D3v is the better-sounding choice. Excellent midrange linearity for a tiny desktop speaker: Erin’s Klippel data spans just 1.7dB from 300Hz to 5kHz. The tradeoff: A rising upper-frequency balance and vertical crossover interference keep it from being uniformly neutral at every angle; aim the tweeters toward ear height.
Why pick the Yamaha HS3: Compact desktop studio monitor system translating the iconic Yamaha HS white-cone aesthetic and neutral voicing into an ultra-compact footprint. The catch: Rating estimated based on acoustic specs and larger HS-series (Yamaha HS5, Yamaha HS7, Yamaha HS8) laboratory data.
Buy the ADAM Audio D3v. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $120 saving on the Yamaha HS3 is not enough to make up the difference.
Worth knowing: the Yamaha HS3 has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 2.7 to 3.1, so treat this verdict as provisional.

The Two Speakers In Full
ADAM Audio D3v: $349.99 per pair Amazon $349.99 eBay
Pros: Excellent midrange linearity for a tiny desktop speaker: Erin’s Klippel data spans just 1.7dB from 300Hz to 5kHz. Side passive radiators help bass reach -3dB at about 51Hz, substantially deeper than the Genelec 8010A or Audio Smile Little British Monitor. Predicted preference scores of 5.37 standalone and 7.59 with an ideal subwoofer support it as a particularly useful compact system without a sub. USB-C, analog inputs and placement filters simplify desk setup. Measured bass extension of 50Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 86.5dB.
Cons: A rising upper-frequency balance and vertical crossover interference keep it from being uniformly neutral at every angle; aim the tweeters toward ear height. The limiter reduces bass and midrange output as volume rises, with the existing review’s compression tests putting usable maximum output around 89-90dB at 1m. Deep bass at moderate volume should not be confused with high output capability.

Yamaha HS3: $229.99 per pair Estimated Amazon $229.99 eBay
Same family: the Yamaha HS4 (larger bookshelf, ranked higher, estimated 3.1/5), the Yamaha HS5 (larger bookshelf, rated 3.6/5), the Yamaha HS7 (larger bookshelf, rated 3.9/5), the Yamaha HS8 (larger bookshelf, rated 4.4/5) and the Yamaha HS8S (subwoofer, rated 3/5).
Pros: Compact desktop studio monitor system translating the iconic Yamaha HS white-cone aesthetic and neutral voicing into an ultra-compact footprint. Features a 3.5-inch woofer and 0.75-inch dome tweeter driven by a Class-D 26W + 26W amplifier. Equipped with rear Room Control (0/-2/-4dB below 500Hz) and High Trim (0/±2dB above 2kHz) switches to correct boundary proximity buildup on desktop surfaces.
Cons: Rating estimated based on acoustic specs and larger HS-series (Yamaha HS5, Yamaha HS7, Yamaha HS8) laboratory data. Small 3.5-inch woofer and rear Twisted Flare port roll off sharply below 70Hz (-10dB), with limited maximum SPL compared to full nearfield studio monitors.
