#75 Salk WoW1: $1,295 per pair Discontinued eBay

Pros: Premium Hiquphon and SEAS Excel drivers in a hand-finished cabinet, with deep bass for its size (55.7Hz at -3dB) and even directivity in Audio Science Review’s measurements (2.99dB variation in the directivity index). Measured bass extension of 55.7Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 78.5dB.

Cons: Discontinued after Salk Sound ended speaker production, so it is found used. Audio Science Review measured a pronounced dip around 500 to 700Hz, very high bass distortion below about 50Hz and low 78.5dB sensitivity, and did not recommend it.

Frequency Response

How the Salk WoW1 measures across the audible range. A flatter listening window (the sound arriving straight at you) is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. The estimated in-room response adds what a typical room does, and there a gentle, even tilt down toward the treble is ideal. Both curves are shifted so their 300 Hz to 3 kHz average sits at 0 dB.

EQ for a Neutral Response

Flattens the measured listening window from the Salk WoW1's own bass extension up to 16 kHz. Set a preamp of -3.4 dB, then add these filters to any parametric equalizer in the signal path: the speaker's app or DSP if it has parametric EQ, a miniDSP, Equalizer APO or Wavelet. Boosts are kept to 3 dB, and EQ cannot fix how evenly the speaker spreads sound off-axis, which is why some speakers gain more than others. Predicted preference score with this EQ: 5.2, up from 4.4 (7.4 with an ideal subwoofer, up from 6.6). Calculated by Speaker Ranking from the spinorama measurements above.
