#57 Nexus MTM DIY: $600 per pair eBay

Pros: Two woofers around the tweeter reach deeper than the Nexus MT DIY: 56.6Hz at -3dB and about 45Hz at -10dB, so it needs less help from a subwoofer. The listening window is fairly even (0.28 deviation), for a preference score of 5.08 that reaches 7.38 with an ideal subwoofer. MTG Designs publishes the crossover and sells a PCB kit, and it is voiced to match the rest of the Nexus family. Measured bass extension of 56.6Hz (-3dB).

Cons: It is a design to build yourself, with no finished retail version. Vertical dispersion is narrow (about 20 degrees either side), as with most MTM layouts, so it sounds best with the tweeter aimed at ear height. The on-axis response is a little less smooth than the Nexus MT DIY, and the measurements are low quality.

Frequency Response

How the Nexus MTM DIY measures across the audible range. A flatter listening window (the sound arriving straight at you) is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. The estimated in-room response adds what a typical room does, and there a gentle, even tilt down toward the treble is ideal. Both curves are shifted so their 300 Hz to 3 kHz average sits at 0 dB.

EQ for a Neutral Response

No EQ preset: the best simple EQ we can fit to these measurements improves the predicted preference score by less than 0.2. The listening window is already close to flat, and what holds the score back, such as narrow ripple in the response or uneven output off-axis, is not something EQ can fix without making it worse elsewhere.
