#109 Focal Elegia: $896.58 Discontinued Amazon eBay
Newer model: the Focal Azurys, ranked higher, rated 3.5/5, released Jun 2024. See every Focal Elegia, Celestee and Azurys generation.
Pros: A wired closed-back headphone with a 40mm driver, 35 ohms and 105 dB SPL/mW sensitivity, so it plays loudly from a phone or portable player. The low mids and midrange from 200 Hz to 3 kHz are within about 1.5 dB of the target, so voices and acoustic instruments stay natural. It has a smooth upper bass and a mellow, relaxed character that suits long, fatigue-free listening.
Cons: Treble is well under target, about 6.5 dB down in the presence region and 7.3 dB down from 6 to 10 kHz, with a deep 14 dB dip near 9.9 kHz, so cymbals, strings and vocal detail sound dark and veiled. Sub-bass is also about 4.6 dB under target, so deep bass lacks rumble. At 430 g it is heavy, and the price is high for a score of 60. Discontinued.
