Short answer: the Zealot ZE01. It ranks #27 of 75 boombox speakers by sound quality at $169.90; the ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #68 and costs $169.99, so there is little reason to consider the other one.
What the Zealot ZE01 offers: Appears to be the same internals as the S95 Watch for: A little rolled off up top and not that balanced through the rest of the range. Clarity isn’t as good as better speakers.
What the ION Pathfinder 280 offers: A practical all-day event speaker with an exceptionally long claimed 68-hour battery, wheels, telescoping handle, FM radio, lighting and a full graphic EQ/presets. RTINGS finds it gets loud with relatively little compression, and its wide dispersion makes it a useful choice for outdoor background music or casual gatherings. Watch for: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers. It is heavy, only IPX5 splash-resistant, and cannot produce a true stereo image from one cabinet. Use the EQ before judging its sound.
Buy the Zealot ZE01. It ranks higher for sound quality than the ION Pathfinder 280 and costs less, which settles it without a real tradeoff to make.
If sound quality matters at all to you, skip the ION Pathfinder 280. It ranks near the bottom of the 75 boombox speakers, so look higher up the list instead.
If battery life is a priority, the ION Pathfinder 280 is rated for 100 hours versus 40 hours for the Zealot ZE01.
