Short answer: the Yamaha HS5 for a neutral mix reference. It is very neutral and cheaper at $399.98 against $239.98, though it is not as deep in the bass as others in its size class and has a slight midrange boost. The Presonus Eris E5 XT has smooth directivity through the crossover, but its on-axis response is uneven, with peaks at both extremes and a dip around the roughly 3kHz crossover.
What the Yamaha HS5 gets right: Very neutral. Excellent for mixing and anything needing a neutral output. The tradeoff: Not quite as deep of bass as some of the others in this size class. Slight midrange boost.
Buy the Yamaha HS5. It is rated higher for sound quality; the Presonus Eris E5 XT is no longer sold new.

Pros: ASR found reasonably smooth early-reflection directivity, which makes broad EQ correction more promising than on speakers whose off-axis response changes abruptly. Balanced inputs and placement controls suit studio use. The measured preference scores are 3.70 standalone and 6.32 with an ideal subwoofer. Measured bass extension of 88Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The measurements do not support describing it as very neutral: excess midrange and reduced lower-midrange/upper-bass weight produce a bass-light balance. The 300Hz-5kHz span is 4.3dB. Its automated -3dB crossing is affected by response shape, so it should not be treated as a simple bass-cutoff specification. A subwoofer adds low bass but does not fix the elevated midrange.

Newer model: the PreSonus Eris Studio 5, ranked higher, estimated 3.6/5.
Pros: ASR’s measurements show reasonably consistent directivity through the crossover, so EQ changes are more likely to benefit both direct and reflected sound. Bass reaches -3dB around 56Hz. A standalone preference score of 3.58 rises to 6.00 with an ideal subwoofer, indicating useful bass reach but only moderate native tonal performance. Measured bass extension of 56.4Hz (-3dB).
Cons: The response has bass and treble emphasis with a recessed crossover region; smooth directivity carries that imbalance into room reflections rather than fixing it. Existing distortion testing shows problems across a broad range when pushed to 96dB. Tone correction and moderate levels help, but it is not a reference-flat monitor out of the box. Discontinued.
