The Xiaomi Sound Outdoor is the lighter option. An affordable waterproof outdoor speaker with a separate tweeter, decent battery life and linking to many more speakers. At 1.3 lbs (597 g) it weighs much less than the Sonos Play at 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg). It links with other speakers (Speakersync, up to 100 speakers), which the Sonos Play cannot. Watch for: Bass reach is limited for the cabinet size, with a rated lower limit of 60Hz, and the boosted bass gets somewhat uncontrolled at high levels.
The Sonos Play is the longer-running choice. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with wide stereo sound, a long lasting swappable battery, waterproofing and full Sonos multiroom support. It is rated for 24 hours of battery against 12 for the Xiaomi Sound Outdoor. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Xiaomi Sound Outdoor lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Xiaomi Sound Outdoor. The tradeoff: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the Xiaomi Sound Outdoor. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Sonos Play and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.
