The Ultimate Ears Boom 4 is the better-sounding, longer-running choice. IP67 rated, floats, and finally charges via USB-C instead of the older Booms’ Micro-USB. It is rated for 15 hours of battery against 9 for the Ultimate Ears Roll 2. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Ultimate Ears Roll 2. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. The tradeoff: Not much improvement over the old ones.
The Ultimate Ears Roll 2 is the lighter option. Thin, flat profile fits easily in a bag or purse. At 0.7 lbs (330 g) it weighs much less than the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 at 1.4 lbs (620 g). It keeps a wired aux input, which the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 lacks. The catch: Barely any bass, rolled off treble off axis.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Boom 4. It is rated higher for sound quality; the Ultimate Ears Roll 2 is no longer sold new.
