Short answer: the ION Pathfinder 280, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #100 of 112 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 2.2/5, at $199.99; the Turtlebox Gen 3 ranks #104, rated 2.1/5, and costs $430, so there is little reason to consider the other one. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 112 boombox speakers, and the Tribit Stormbox Blast, ranked #2 at $179.99, is a better place to start if sound quality matters.
The Turtlebox Gen 3 is the lighter, tougher option. A loud, waterproof and crushproof outdoor speaker with a big battery, device charging and party mode linking. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Pathfinder 280 at 23.8 lbs (10.8 kg). It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Pathfinder 280. It has a microphone input for karaoke or announcements, which the ION Pathfinder 280 lacks. The tradeoff: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Turtlebox Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the deeper-bass, longer-running option. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. Its bass reaches about 58Hz before falling 10dB, against 65Hz for the Turtlebox Gen 3. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 25 for the Turtlebox Gen 3. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox Gen 3 lacks. Watch for: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the ION Pathfinder 280. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Turtlebox Gen 3 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
