Short answer: the Tribit Xsound Plus 2. It ranks #32 of 135 medium speakers by sound quality at $60; the JBL Pulse 5 ranks #42 and costs $199.99, so there is not much of a tradeoff to weigh.
The case for the Tribit Xsound Plus 2: Using this EQ gets the best sound quality out of it. The catch: the factory EQs boost both treble and bass, there’s a peak at 320hz and a dip at 500hz, and the bass turns slappy and distorted in xbass mode.
What the JBL Pulse 5 gets right: It has a cool light show, though it’s no longer synced to the music like the Pulse 2’s was. Set against that: the bass isn’t quite as deep as others and the plastic scratches easily.
Buy the Tribit Xsound Plus 2. It ranks higher for sound quality than the JBL Pulse 5 and costs less, so there is no real case for the other one.
If battery life is a priority, the Tribit Xsound Plus 2 is rated for 24 hours versus 12 hours for the JBL Pulse 5.
