Short answer: the Brane X. It ranks #4 of 115 large speakers by sound quality, rated 4.6/5, at $549. The Sony ULT Field 5 ranks #56, rated 3.5/5, at $268, $281 cheaper, not enough of a saving to outweigh the sound-quality gap.
The Sony ULT Field 5 is the longer-running choice. A tough, waterproof party speaker with loud, bass focused output, an aux input, a power bank and a long battery. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 12 for the Brane X. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the Brane X lacks. The catch: It prioritizes bass and loudness over fidelity: reviews find the upper mids and highs subdued, with limited stereo separation and soundstage depth.
The Brane X is the better-sounding pick. A portable speaker with extraordinarily deep bass for its size, plus Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Alexa and a low latency aux input. Watch for: The front-facing design has only moderate dispersion, so sound changes noticeably off to the sides or behind it.
Buy the Brane X. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $281 you would save on the Sony ULT Field 5 does not close the gap.
