Short answer: the ULT Field 3 if sound quality matters most, the ULT Field 1 if price matters most. The ULT Field 1 ranks #99 of 179 medium speakers at $138; the ULT Field 3 ranks #71 at $208, $70 more.
The Field 1’s complaints are narrower than the pricier Field 3’s. Its only listed drawback is an upper midrange peak with rolled-off treble, against IP67 water resistance, real-world battery life around 28+ hours with ULT bass-boost mode off, and the ability to stereo-pair with a second Field 1. The Field 3 carries more: reviewers describe it as sounding a bit hollow and boosted in the treble, note that its custom EQ and ULT bass-boost button can’t be used together, say bass is very weak with ULT off, and mention it lost to the JBL Charge 6 in a side-by-side test.
What the Field 3 adds: built-in stereo output, which the Field 1 lacks, a 10-band app EQ, and a power bank function.
If battery life is a priority, the Field 3 is rated for 24 hours versus 12 hours for the Field 1, though real-world testing found the Field 1 lasting closer to 28 hours with its bass-boost mode off.
Buy the Sony ULT Field 1 when the price outweighs sound quality for you, and it has fewer reported tonal complaints besides.
Buy the Sony ULT Field 3 when built-in stereo output and a longer rated battery life matter more than saving $70.
