Short answer: the Sonos Sub 4, if you are buying new. The Sonos Sub (Gen 3) measures as well as it (#114 vs #10 of 73 subwoofers, 3.7/5 vs 3.7/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Sonos Sub 4 is still sold new at $899.
What the Sonos Sub 4 does well: A wireless subwoofer for Sonos soundbars and speakers, with force-cancelling drivers and setup from the Sonos app, placed near any outlet. The tradeoff: No independent measurements yet, so its output can’t be compared with ranked subwoofers.
The case for the Sonos Sub (Gen 3): A wireless Sonos subwoofer with two opposed woofers and newer electronics, so it still works with current Sonos soundbars and speakers. The catch: No independent measurements yet, so its output can’t be compared with ranked subwoofers.
Buy the Sonos Sub 4 if you want one new; the Sonos Sub (Gen 3) is discontinued, so only look for it used.
About the ratings: neither speaker has been measured yet, so both ratings are estimated from measured siblings and predecessors (likely ranges: Sonos Sub 4 3.5 to 3.9; Sonos Sub (Gen 3) 3.5 to 3.9). Treat this verdict as provisional.
