Short answer: the Sony ULT Field 3. It ranks #74 of 142 medium speakers at $179, while the Sonos Roam 2 ranks #60 at $138, $41 more. That is a real gap in measured sound quality for less money.
The Roam 2’s sound quality is essentially unchanged from the original Roam. Its own notes describe it as very neutral, but they’re also direct that this is the exact same sound quality as the model it replaces, with bass extension that isn’t very good and distortion that creeps in as you push the bass higher. It does add a dedicated pairing button separate from the power button, and it’s genuinely tiny at under a pound.
The ULT Field 3 wins on both durability and features, with a real EQ tradeoff of its own. It carries an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance, well beyond the Roam 2’s IPX5, plus 24 hours of battery life against the Roam 2’s 10 hours, a 10-band app EQ, Party Connect linking for up to 100 speakers, and a USB-C port that can charge your phone. Its own notes describe the sound as a bit hollow and a bit boosted in the treble, and flag that Sony’s custom EQ and the ULT bass-boost button can’t be used together: turning on ULT disables the EQ, and bass is very weak with ULT switched off. In a side-by-side comparison, it also lost out to the JBL Charge 6 despite being the larger speaker.
Everything else favors the ULT Field 3 on paper: LDAC codec support the Roam 2 lacks, stereo output versus the Roam 2’s mono, TWS pairing, and a USB-C power bank output.
Buy the Sony ULT Field 3 for better measured sound, longer battery life, and more durability for less money.
Buy the Sonos Roam 2 only if its much smaller size, Wi-Fi connectivity, or Sonos ecosystem integration matter more to you than sound quality or price.
