Different classes, so treat this as a step-up-or-not question rather than a head-to-head. The Sonos Era 300 ranks #6 of 10 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $499; the Sonos Move ranks #30 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $299.95.
What the Sonos Era 300 does well: A Wi-Fi smart speaker with real stereo and Dolby Atmos spatial audio, excellent Alexa voice pickup and Trueplay room tuning. It links with other speakers (Sonos multi-room, AirPlay 2), which the Sonos Move cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Move lacks. Watch for: RTINGS’ one listed con is some compression at max volume.
The Sonos Move is the battery-powered, tougher option. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with warm, full bodied sound, automatic room tuning and a charging base. Its battery is rated for 11 hours, while the Sonos Era 300 needs an outlet. It is rated IP56, while the Sonos Era 300 has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Sonos Era 300 lacks. Watch for: It is mono, heavy and less portable than a conventional Bluetooth speaker, while bass pumping and compression become audible at high volume.
Worth knowing: the Sonos Move is discontinued, though it still ranks #30 of 117 large speakers by sound quality, so a used unit beats most of what is still sold new. The Sonos Move’s replacement, the Sonos Move 2, is still sold new.
Buy the Sonos Era 300 at $499 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Sonos Move at $299.95 for a large speaker instead.
