Last updated: October 13, 2026

Short answer: the Sennheiser HD 800 S for better sound quality, the Sennheiser HD 599 for the lower price. The Sennheiser HD 800 ranks higher than the Sennheiser HD 599 (#144 vs #188 of 382 over-ear headphones) but is discontinued. Its replacement, the Sennheiser HD 800 S, is rated 4.2/5 at $1,799.95; the Sennheiser HD 599 is rated 3.6/5 at $189.95, $1,610 cheaper.

Sennheiser HD 599 vs Sennheiser HD 800

The case for the Sennheiser HD 599: A preference score of 73 and a modest 2.74 dB deviation from the Harman target in oratory1990’s measurement make this a fairly smooth open back. The catch: Sub-bass falls about 6 dB under target below 60 Hz, so the extra warmth sits higher up and the deepest rumble is missing.

Why pick the Sennheiser HD 800: The median of 6 hobbyist measurements gives it a very good Harman preference score of 78 with a 2.76 dB spread. The tradeoff: Discontinued, so it is mainly found used.

Buy the Sennheiser HD 599 if price matters most. For better sound quality, the Sennheiser HD 800 S, the replacement for the discontinued Sennheiser HD 800, is rated higher but costs $1,799.95.

Same family: the Sennheiser HD 569 (lower-end model, ranked lower, rated 1.6/5).

Pros: A preference score of 73 and a modest 2.74 dB deviation from the Harman target in oratory1990’s measurement make this a fairly smooth open back. Bass runs about 2 dB above target and the lows through the low mids are about 2.7 dB up, which gives vocals and guitars a full, warm body. At 50 ohms and 106 dB sensitivity it is easy to drive, and at 250 g it is light.

Cons: Sub-bass falls about 6 dB under target below 60 Hz, so the extra warmth sits higher up and the deepest rumble is missing. A 9.6 dB dip near 9.8 kHz and about 3.5 dB less air above 10 kHz take the sparkle off cymbals, while a 3.7 dB peak near 5.7 kHz can add some edge to vocals. The open back leaks sound and offers no isolation.

Newer model: the Sennheiser HD 800 S, ranked higher, rated 4.2/5. See every Sennheiser HD 800 generation.

Pros: The median of 6 hobbyist measurements gives it a very good Harman preference score of 78 with a 2.76 dB spread. Upper treble lifts about 2.6 dB for extra air and sparkle. It uses 1 x 56mm dynamic.

Cons: Discontinued, so it is mainly found used. Sub-bass is 6.8 dB short at 30 Hz, so deep bass lacks rumble.
