Short answer: the Polk Signature Elite ES20. It ranks #119 of 222 bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.7/5, at $398.98; the SVS Prime Bookshelf ranks #150, rated 3.5/5, and costs $599, so there is little reason to consider the other one.
The Polk Signature Elite ES20 is the deeper-bass pick. Large, efficient bookshelf speakers with unusually deep bass for the price and wide horizontal coverage. Its bass reaches about 55.7Hz before falling 3dB, against 72Hz for the SVS Prime Bookshelf. The tradeoff: Predicted in-room smoothness of 0.238 and directivity-index consistency of 3.81 are average rather than class-leading.
The SVS Prime Bookshelf is the more accurate pick. Affordable bookshelf speakers with a sealed woofer compartment, wide even dispersion and reasonable sensitivity. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 5.17 against 4.49 for the Polk Signature Elite ES20. The catch: A scooped mid-range paired with a boosted upper mid-range creates an audibly uneven tonal balance, and there’s an additional dip in the treble around 4-5kHz that reads as slightly tinny relative to the recessed mid-range.
Buy the Polk Signature Elite ES20. It is rated higher for sound quality than the SVS Prime Bookshelf and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
