Short answer: the gen 2, and the gen 1’s own review agrees. The gen 2 ranks #15 of 39 party speakers against the gen 1’s #28, for $29 more.
This is a rare case where the older model’s own cons text tells you what to buy. The gen 1’s cons state it plainly: replaced by the Onn Large Party gen 2, which is a big improvement all around and the one you should buy. Its other cons describe bass that is not deep, some midrange peaks, and a sound that gets boxy and distorted at higher volumes. The gen 2’s pros confirm the fix, calling it a huge improvement over the gen 1 with much deeper bass, on top of being an insane value speaker.
What the gen 2 adds:
- IPX4 splash resistance, where the gen 1 has no water resistance rating at all.
- A microphone input with karaoke echo effect and a guitar input, both missing on the gen 1.
- FM radio, listed as a feature on the gen 2 spec sheet but not confirmed on the gen 1’s.
One note: the Onn Large Party gen 1 is no longer in production and isn’t widely stocked new anymore.
What the gen 1 keeps in its favor: the gen 2’s own cons note it is not quite as loud as the old one, and the gen 1 keeps true stereo output and TWS pairing, which the gen 2 does not have.
Buy the gen 2. Its own predecessor’s review points you straight to it, and the deeper, cleaner bass is worth the higher price.
Buy the gen 1 only if you find one at a steep discount and pure maximum loudness matters more to you than bass depth or clarity.

Pros: A remarkably full-featured, manageable 9.5kg party speaker: wheels and handle, FM radio, aux, USB-A charging, mic and guitar inputs with karaoke echo, and Party Sync. Independent testing confirms bass with real impact and enough output for a large room; it is a clear improvement over the Gen 1 for low-end weight.
Cons: The low price shows in the refinement. Consumer Reports found boomy bass, hazy/grainy mids, a prominent smeared treble and a narrow, two-dimensional soundfield; it also notes distortion or other audio issues. There is no app or EQ to tame the tuning, and IPX4 only covers splashes rather than rain or immersion.

Onn Large Party gen 1: $100 Discontinued eBay
Pros: A genuinely useful feature set for a compact party speaker: FM radio, 3.5mm aux, USB-A phone charging, a mic/guitar input, lights, and Party Sync pairing. Its rolling 10.5kg cabinet, carry handle and claimed 13-hour battery make it easy to take to casual outdoor gatherings, and it can play louder than a typical small Bluetooth speaker. Measured bass extension of ~60Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Sound is not a strong reason to seek one out. Reviewer comparisons find limited deep bass (about 60Hz at -10dB), uneven mids and a boxy, strained presentation at high volume. It has no app or EQ, no water rating, and is discontinued; the newer Onn Large Party gen 2 is the more sensible choice when available. Discontinued.
