Short answer: neither discontinued speaker is a strong sound-quality recommendation, but the Onn Large Party gen 1 is the more practical all-rounder. It combines a rolling 23.1 lbs (10.5 kg) enclosure, 13-hour battery, FM radio, aux, USB charging, mic or guitar input, lights, and Party Sync in one package. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 49 party speakers, and the Onn XL Wireless Party Speaker, ranked #11 at $249, is a better place to start if sound quality matters. The Onn Large Party gen 1 has been replaced by the Onn Large Party gen 2. If you are buying new, get the Onn Large Party gen 2.
The Onn’s own review notes boxy mids, limited bass around 60Hz, and strain at high volume. The AL500’s stated feature list promises a much more ambitious dual-subwoofer and horn arrangement, but its record only confirms similarly shallow bass and does not provide the Onn’s useful day-to-day inputs or portability detail.
Buy the Onn Large Party gen 1 if you find one cheaply and want karaoke-style inputs, FM, and a portable party feature set.
Buy the Altec Lansing AL500 only if its larger claimed driver system and built-in singing microphone better match your use.
