Short answer: the Onkyo GX-30ARC. It ranks #44 of 76 powered bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.7/5, at $249; the Edifier MR5 ranks #59, rated 3.3/5, and costs $349.99, which makes this an easy call rather than a real tradeoff.
The Onkyo GX-30ARC is the better-sounding pick. HDMI ARC, USB-C, optical and analog inputs make it a convenient compact system for a desk or TV. The tradeoff: The response rises toward the treble by about 0.48dB per octave.
The case for the Edifier MR5: Erin’s Audio Corner measured useful bass for a compact 5-inch monitor, with F3 around 51Hz. The tradeoff: Erin’s CTA-2034 data shows upper-midrange and treble irregularities, while off-axis response narrows more quickly than ideal above about 2-3kHz.
Buy the Onkyo GX-30ARC. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Edifier MR5 and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.

The Two Speakers In Full
Onkyo GX-30ARC: $249.00 per pair Amazon B&H Photo Video eBay
Pros: HDMI ARC, USB-C, optical and analog inputs make it a convenient compact system for a desk or TV. Erin’s Klippel data gives a 3.69 standalone preference score and 6.42 with an ideal subwoofer. The midrange response spans 3.8dB, offering usable but not reference-level tonal performance.
Cons: The response rises toward the treble by about 0.48dB per octave. Bass reaches -3dB around 74Hz, not the lower LFX value used inside the preference model. Vertical listening position affects crossover balance. Its extensive connectivity does not compensate for response irregularities, and the published tonal data alone does not establish maximum clean output.

Edifier MR5: $349.99 per pair Amazon B&H Photo Video eBay
Pros: Erin’s Audio Corner measured useful bass for a compact 5-inch monitor, with F3 around 51Hz. The three-way active design adds a dedicated 3.75-inch midrange, and the 110W RMS system, app EQ, room-compensation controls, LDAC, balanced XLR/TRS inputs, and front headphone output make it unusually well equipped at $350 per pair. Measured bass extension of 51Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 85dB.
Cons: Erin’s CTA-2034 data shows upper-midrange and treble irregularities, while off-axis response narrows more quickly than ideal above about 2-3kHz. Bass output is level-limited below about 70Hz and distortion/compression rise at higher levels, so it suits moderate nearfield use better than loud mid-field playback.
