Neumann KH80 DSP vs Genelec 8320A

Last updated: October 4, 2026

Short answer: these are two compact calibration-minded monitors: choose the Neumann KH80 DSP for its practical nearfield architecture, or the Genelec 8320A for its exceptionally clean bass alignment and waveguide behavior. The KH80’s steep crossover and elliptical guide are designed for close listening, but it carries a substantial small-monitor price. Genelec’s 8320A has exceptionally low bass-alignment resonance and a smooth listening window, although its on-axis deviation is merely good rather than class-leading.

Neumann KH80 DSP vs Genelec 8320A

What the Neumann KH80 DSP offers: Compact 2-way nearfield monitor; a 1” tweeter in an elliptical waveguide over a 4” mid-woofer, crossed over around 1.8kHz with steep 48dB/octave slopes. The catch: High price for its size.

The case for the Genelec 8320A: The Directivity Control Waveguide and die cast aluminum Minimum Diffraction Enclosure produce a listening window smoothness score of 0.53 and a low frequency alignment Q of just 0.227, the cleanest, least resonant bass rolloff of any speaker in this whole batch. Set against that: On axis deviation measures 0.169dB average, decent but not class leading next to the AsciLab and Audio Smile entries in this batch.

Buy the Neumann KH80 DSP if you want a compact DSP nearfield with a low crossover and controlled close-range presentation.

Buy the Genelec 8320A if clean bass alignment and Genelec’s directivity-control approach are your priorities.

Neumann KH80 DSP ranking card

Pros: ASR’s selected Klippel measurement has a 1.4dB midrange response span and virtually no overall on-axis tilt. Scores of 5.89 standalone and 8.25 with an ideal subwoofer indicate excellent tonal accuracy in a compact monitor. The waveguide and steep crossover provide useful control of reflected sound, while placement filters help compensate for a desk or nearby boundaries. Existing multitone testing supports good moderate-level clarity. Measured bass extension of 57Hz (-3dB), with a measured sensitivity of 91.9dB.

Cons: Bass reaches -3dB around 59Hz in this measurement, less deep than the KH120 II. Output protection and increasing multitone distortion limit loud listening, especially in the bass. Room reflections and listening distance can alter perceived treble balance despite its flat direct response. Calibration equipment adds to the cost; the preference score is not a measurement of maximum clean output. It is expensive for its size.

Genelec 8320A ranking card

Pros: A measured 1.6dB span from 300Hz to 5kHz and preference scores of 5.52 standalone and 8.04 with an ideal subwoofer support accurate close-range monitoring. The waveguide helps control the balance between direct and reflected sound. GLM room calibration is useful for matching levels and placement in a compact setup. Measured bass extension of 67.4Hz (-3dB).

Cons: The -3dB point is about 67Hz, making a subwoofer important for lower bass and giving the larger 8330A a practical advantage without one. Calibration hardware is sold separately. The small woofer limits its intended listening distance and bass output; a favorable response-fit parameter is not evidence that it has uniquely well-damped bass or unusually high headroom.
