Short answer: the Marshall Stanmore III. It ranks #6 of 28 powered desktop speakers by sound quality (rated 3.8/5) at $249.18 and is still sold new; the Marshall Stanmore ranks #22 (rated 3.5/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The Marshall Stanmore’s replacement, the Marshall Stanmore IV, is rated 3.8/5 at $429.99.
What the Marshall Stanmore does well: Same 5.25 inch woofer, twin tweeter, 80W layout as the Marshall Stanmore II, so it plays loud and full for a room. It supports aptX Bluetooth, which the Marshall Stanmore III lacks. The catch: Midrange sounds a little boxy and recessed, with less detail than the price suggests.
Why pick the Marshall Stanmore III: At 9.7 lbs (4.4 kg), Marshall Stanmore III combines 5” (midrange/woofer), 1x 5” midrange, 2x 0.75” Dome tweeters with Bluetooth, RCA, Aux. Watch for: Bass is limited by its 45Hz to 20kHz (Manufacturer specified) specification.
Buy the Marshall Stanmore III. It is rated higher for sound quality; the Marshall Stanmore is no longer sold new.
About the ratings: the Marshall Stanmore’s rating is estimated from measured siblings and predecessors rather than its own measurements, with a likely range of 3.2 to 3.8, so this verdict could change once it is measured.
