Short answer: the Marshall Emberton III, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #126 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 2.7/5) at $129.99 and is still sold new; the Marshall Emberton ranks #138 (rated 2.6/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 175 medium speakers, so if sound quality matters, consider the EarFun Uboom L instead, ranked #2 at $49.79.
What the Marshall Emberton does well: Two full range drivers fire in stereo with a wide, enveloping soundstage, and RTINGS found its mids and treble balanced for clear vocals. The tradeoff: Little low bass and it does not get very loud.
The Marshall Emberton III is the longer-running choice. 30 hour battery life: among the best in its class; a 20 min quick-charge gives 4 hours. It is rated for 32 hours of battery against 20 for the Marshall Emberton. It links with other speakers (Marshall Stack), which the Marshall Emberton cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Marshall Emberton lacks. Watch for: Strange unnatural echo-like sound coloration, bass not as deep as competitors.
Buy the Marshall Emberton III. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Marshall Emberton is discontinued.
Worth knowing: the Marshall Emberton has not been measured yet. Its rating is estimated from related models, with a likely range of 2.4 to 2.9, so treat this verdict as provisional.
