Short answer: the KEF Q Concerto Meta. It ranks #11 of 131 large bookshelf speakers at $1,399.99, while the Wharfedale Linton 85 ranks #32 for $1,999, $599.01 more. That is a meaningful gap in measured sound quality for less money.
Bass extension is essentially a wash between these two. Erin’s Audio Corner measured both at 35Hz to -10dB, with the Linton 85 edging ahead by a single hertz at -3dB (52Hz versus 53Hz). The real difference is in directivity and driver layout: the Q Concerto Meta’s coaxial tweeter-and-midrange arrangement gives it really good in-room neutrality with consistent horizontal directivity from seat to seat, and that directivity holds remarkably steady from lower treble into upper treble where many similarly priced speakers narrow sharply. Its tradeoff is a radiation pattern of about ±50 degrees, narrower than the reviewer’s preferred ±60 degrees for a stronger sense of envelopment, and it needs to sit closer to on-axis since heavy toe-out combined with its shelved-down top end can sound noticeably dark.
The Linton 85’s separate three-driver layout brings its own vertical tradeoff. Its notes describe a very neutral frequency response and good bass extension as its core strengths, but the physical spacing between its 8-inch Kevlar woofer, 5-inch Kevlar midrange, and soft dome tweeter makes the vertical off-axis response noticeably worse than the KEF’s coincident design, so listening height matters more here.
The two are otherwise close in scale: the Linton 85 is the larger, heavier speaker at over 18kg each versus the Q Concerto Meta’s 9.5kg, and it runs at a higher nominal impedance of 6 ohms against the KEF’s 4 ohms.
Buy the KEF Q Concerto Meta for more consistent directivity and a lower price, and try to sit close to on-axis rather than toeing it out heavily.
Buy the Wharfedale Linton 85 if you specifically prefer its tonal balance or cabinet size, and pay attention to your seated ear height given its three separate drivers.
