JBL One Series 104 vs NHT Pro M-00

Last updated: October 1, 2026

Short answer: both have a serious flaw, so pick the one whose weakness you can live with, though neither ranks well in its class. The 104 relies on heavy internal EQ to compensate for raw drivers that measure with no bass, no low mids and highly irregular highs on their own. The NHT Pro M-00 offers a cast aluminum-zinc enclosure that doubles as a heatsink, RCA and XLR/TRS inputs and a voicing switch, but it has a sudden suck-out in the upper bass that affects many commonly used notes. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 68 powered bookshelf speakers, so if sound quality matters, consider the JBL 305P MKII instead, ranked #13 at $289.

JBL One Series 104 vs NHT Pro M-00

What the JBL One Series 104 offers: Heavy internal EQ from the amplifier meaningfully compensates for otherwise poor raw driver measurements. Watch for: Measuring the passive drivers alone (bypassing the amplifier’s EQ) showed “no bass, no low mids, and highly irregular highs” - a disaster by the reviewer’s description.

Buy the JBL One Series 104 only if you find one used in good condition; both are discontinued, and it is the better rated of the two. For a new speaker, start with the JBL 305P MKII instead.

Pros: ASR’s powered-system measurement gives -3dB bass around 72Hz, and the compact coaxial layout is convenient for a small desk. Its internal equalization is part of the working speaker and should be included when assessing it, rather than judging the passive drivers with that correction bypassed. Measured bass extension of 45Hz (-3dB).

Cons: Even with the active system measured properly, scores are only 1.36 standalone and 4.08 with an ideal subwoofer. The 4.9dB midrange span and a high-frequency cancellation around 7.4kHz indicate significant unevenness; the review also found some vocals bright and irritating. These are results for the original 104, not a verification of the later 104-BT. Discontinued.

Pros: A sturdy metal enclosure, analog studio/consumer connections and selectable nearfield/farfield voicing give it practical features as an older powered monitor. Measured bass extension of 83.3Hz (-3dB).

Cons: The review identifies a pronounced upper-bass cancellation, treble peaks and problematic vertical response, and strongly prefers the JBL 305P MKII in direct listening. Discontinued.
