Short answer: the JBL L82 Classic MkII. It ranks #73 of 157 bookshelf speakers by sound quality (rated 4.0/5) at $3,189.95 and is still sold new; the JBL L82 Classic ranks #82 (rated 3.9/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used.
The case for the JBL L82 Classic MkII: The 2023 update keeps the 8” pure pulp woofer and 1” titanium dome tweeter with a revised crossover, a cast frame woofer and bi-wire terminals, rated 44Hz to 40kHz (-6dB). The tradeoff: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared directly with measured speakers; the rating is estimated from its measured predecessor.
Why pick the JBL L82 Classic: A retro two-way with an 8” pure pulp woofer and 1” titanium dome tweeter behind a Quadrex foam grille. The tradeoff: That data is low quality, digitized from a third-party chart, and shows an uneven on-axis response (0.78dB average deviation).
Buy the JBL L82 Classic MkII. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the JBL L82 Classic is discontinued.
