Short answer: both are discontinued, and they are rated the same for sound quality, though neither ranks well in its class. (#47 and #45 of 59 small speakers). Either one is only an option used, so choose on condition and price. If you want one new, the JBL Clip 5 replaces the JBL Clip 3 and is rated 3.4/5 at $59.95. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 59 small speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 ranks #1 at $59.99.

The JBL Clip 2 is the tougher option. Clear vocals and midrange for its size, which Tom’s Guide and Expert Reviews both praised, with IPX7 waterproofing, an aux input and a built-in carabiner. It is rated IPX7, while the JBL Clip 3 has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the JBL Clip 3 lacks. The tradeoff: Listeners found it thinner and quieter than the Bose Soundlink Micro, and Tom’s Guide measured it topping out around 80dB.
What the JBL Clip 3 does well: Aux in. Watch for: Less bass than the JBL Clip.
Buy the JBL Clip 2 or the JBL Clip 3, whichever you find used in better condition; both are discontinued. For a new speaker, buy the JBL Clip 5, which replaces the JBL Clip 3.
