The Ranger’s appeal is toughness, not tuning. Our notes describe it as appearing quite tough, with magnets for attaching it to metal surfaces, and it does have smoother frequency response than other Turtlebox speakers, which is a low bar given the brand’s reputation for boomy sound elsewhere in its lineup. Even improved, its bass is still called kind of thuddy and not as deep as higher-ranked speakers, and it runs heavy for its size, likely a tradeoff for that ruggedness. Our notes also call it overpriced for what it delivers.
The Charge 5’s sound has its own real flaws, described in our notes as warm with shouty upper mids, boosted bass, and slightly rolled-off treble, and it isn’t stereo either. But it still measures and ranks well ahead of the Ranger, and it costs less doing it.
What the Charge 5 adds that the Ranger doesn’t: a USB-A power bank output for charging your phone, an 8-hour battery life edge at 20 hours against the Ranger’s 12-plus, and app-based 3-band EQ.
Buy the JBL Charge 5 for better overall sound quality, a phone-charging power bank, and a lower price, even with its own tuning quirks.
Buy the Turtlebox Ranger only if the rugged, magnet-mount build matters more to you than sound quality or price.
