Short answer: the JBL Charge 5. It ranks #30 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 4.0/5) at $114.95 and is still sold new; the JBL Charge 3 ranks #91 (rated 3.2/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The JBL Charge 3’s replacement, the JBL Charge 6, is rated 4.2/5 at $119.95.
The Charge 5 adds a tweeter and modern features. A separate 20mm tweeter beside the racetrack woofer gives it more clarity than the Charge 3’s two full-range drivers, and its bass reaches about 53Hz before falling 10dB, against the Charge 3’s 63Hz. It charges over USB-C, is rated IP67 and supports AAC. Its sound is warm, with boosted bass and shouty upper mids.
The Charge 3 is discontinued but still has a few extras. It plays in stereo from two drivers, has an aux input and a speakerphone, and doubles as a 6000mAh power bank. Both claim about 20 hours of battery. It charges over Micro USB, and battery failures are common, which matters when buying an older unit used.
Buy the JBL Charge 5. It is rated higher for sound quality; the JBL Charge 3 is no longer sold new.
