JBL 305P MkII vs Yamaha HS5

Last updated: August 7, 2026

These are the two most recommended budget studio monitors that exist, and for good reason: both rank in the top 10 of a 24-speaker class, at $299 and $339.98. The real question isn’t which one is good - both are - it’s which character suits how you’ll use them.

The 305P MkII is close enough to the class leader to matter. Our notes describe it as almost indistinguishable from the Focal Alpha 50 EVO, which is a genuinely high bar, at a lower price than either the Focal or the Yamaha here.

The HS5 is the more neutral of the two, and the one built specifically for mixing. It’s described as excellent for anything needing a neutral, undecorated output - the reference-monitor case in its purest form. Its trade is slightly shallower bass than some others in the class and a small midrange boost.

Practical differences worth knowing: the 305P MkII is rear-ported, so it wants breathing room from the wall behind it, and some units have a faint amp hiss audible at very low levels. The HS5’s bass, while shallower than the 305P’s, is even and doesn’t need EQ correction to sound right.

Buy the 305P MkII if placement is flexible and you want a small price break with performance this close to the class leader. Buy the HS5 if you’re mixing and want the most neutral output in the pair, or if rear clearance for a port isn’t available.
