Short answer: the ION Tailgater Classic, though neither ranks well in its class. It ranks #100 of 111 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 2.2/5, at $169.99; the Turtlebox Gen 3 ranks #103, rated 2.1/5, and costs $430, so there is little reason to consider the other one. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 111 boombox speakers; for better sound, the Tribit Stormbox Blast ranks #2 at $179.99.
The case for the ION Tailgater Classic: A rugged IPX5 speaker with a 6.5 inch woofer and 2 inch tweeter, rated for more than 15 hours of battery. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Turtlebox Gen 3 lacks. The tradeoff: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked boomboxes like the Tribit Stormbox Blast and Harman Kardon Go + Play 3, which reach down to about 43 Hz and 35 Hz.
The Turtlebox Gen 3 is the longer-running, lighter choice. Waterproof (IP67, and it floats) and crushproof, with stainless steel hardware and quality amplifier parts inside. It is rated for 25 hours of battery against 15 for the ION Tailgater Classic. At 10 lbs (4.54 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Tailgater Classic at 19.3 lbs (8.75 kg). It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Tailgater Classic. Watch for: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Turtlebox Gen 2: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality.
Buy the ION Tailgater Classic. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Turtlebox Gen 3 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
