Short answer: the ION Pathfinder 280 on measured sound quality, the Zealot S78 on price, though neither ranks well in its class. The ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #100 of 112 boombox speakers, rated 2.2/5, at $199.99. The Zealot S78 ranks #110, rated 2.0/5, at $91.38, $108.61 cheaper. Both are rated below 3.0/5 among the 112 boombox speakers, so if sound quality matters, consider the Tribit Stormbox Blast instead, ranked #2 at $179.99.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the longer-running pick. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 40 for the Zealot S78. The catch: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
The Zealot S78 is the lighter, tougher option. A loud, rugged party speaker with full waterproofing, a power bank and wireless pairing for outdoor parties. At 9.7 lbs (4.4 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Pathfinder 280 at 23.8 lbs (10.8 kg). It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the ION Pathfinder 280. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the ION Pathfinder 280. Watch for: At high volume, reviews report distortion and fluctuating level, so its headline power is more useful below its maximum setting.
Buy the ION Pathfinder 280 if sound quality is the priority over the price, or the Zealot S78 if the price is the priority over sound quality.
