Short answer: the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7. It ranks #14 of 112 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 4.1/5, at $248.90. The ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #100, rated 2.2/5, at $199.99, $48.91 cheaper, a saving that is not big enough to make up the sound-quality gap.
The Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 is the better-sounding, deeper-bass pick. An elegant home portable with warm, spacious sound, strong deep bass, and stereo pairing with a second unit. Its bass reaches about 37Hz before falling 10dB, against 58Hz for the ION Pathfinder 280. At 6.4 lbs (2.9 kg) it weighs much less than the ION Pathfinder 280 at 23.8 lbs (10.8 kg). It links with other speakers (Wireless Dual Sound), which the ION Pathfinder 280 cannot. The catch: Consumer Reports finds the bass prominent and boomy, mids hazy, treble slightly smeared and the soundstage congested.
The ION Pathfinder 280 is the longer-running, tougher choice. A wheeled all day event speaker with a very long battery, lights, FM radio and a full graphic EQ that gets loud without strain. It is rated for 100 hours of battery against 8 for the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7. It is rated IPX5, while the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 has no water resistance. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7 lacks. The tradeoff: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the Harman Kardon Onyx Studio 7. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $48.91 you would save on the ION Pathfinder 280 does not close the gap.
