These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The Google Home Speaker ranks #13 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $99.99; the Sonos Move ranks #30 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $299.95.
What the Google Home Speaker does well: A compact Gemini smart speaker that doubles as a smart home hub with a Thread border router and Matter support. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Chromecast built-in), which the Sonos Move cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Move lacks. The catch: This is Google’s current speaker, and reviewers agree it is a downgrade in sound from the discontinued Google Nest Audio it replaces: SoundGuys measured its acoustic hardware directly against the Google Nest Audio and found a single 58mm full-range driver against the Google Nest Audio’s 75mm woofer plus dedicated 19mm tweeter, calling it ‘half the audio hardware for the same sticker price.’
The Sonos Move is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with warm, full bodied sound, automatic room tuning and a charging base. Its battery is rated for 11 hours, while the Google Home Speaker needs an outlet. It is rated IP56, while the Google Home Speaker has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Google Home Speaker lacks. Watch for: It is mono, heavy and less portable than a conventional Bluetooth speaker, while bass pumping and compression become audible at high volume.
Worth knowing: the Sonos Move is discontinued, though it still ranks #30 of 117 large speakers by sound quality, so a used unit beats most of what is still sold new. The Sonos Move’s replacement, the Sonos Move 2, is still sold new.
Buy the Google Home Speaker at $99.99 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Sonos Move at $299.95 for a large speaker instead.
